Inserting Ornamentation Symbols (trills, mordents e.t.c...)

The buttons: you will find in the tool-bar Symbols category <Articulation>.

Mark (Select) the area over which a trill shall be drawn. Then click on the button(s):

Position cursor to the position at which the symbol should be inserted, then choose the corresponding button and click.

Ornamentation signs and trills are symbols. They will be moved and deleted also like other Symbols

In Octava, we distinguish two sorts of melodic ornaments:

The case No. 1 - This ornaments are processed by Octava and they will be affected by chords and scales

- To change the diatonic scale of an ornamentation: one scale and one chord must be selected! (For that, please use the chord-pallet).

The case No.2 - custom ornaments based on predefined pattern. This ornaments will not be affected by chords and scales

- If that is an individual custom ornament based on predefined pattern (not affected by chords and scales...!), you can load and assign desired custom playback pattern to actual ornament. You will find this feature by editing the "property" of an ornament. Click with the right mouse button on an ornament, and choose the option "edit Symbol/Text" from the menu which appears.

MIDI Playback  And Creating Custom Melodic Ornaments

"Octava" can playback any ornament!

To achieve this, you must choose one empty bar (somewhere out of range of music length) and input the desired musical content. This is in case if you don't want to interrupt your work on actual music document, so you want to make only one or several custom patterns for your desired playback of ornament you need just now. In other case, you can start with a new document (score), and make all custom patterns for playback of melodic ornaments you will ever need! In this case you need not to find some free bars out of range of your actual score. After entering the musical content for your custom ornament playback, mark this bar, change the notes to "cue notes" and save its content as a pattern: File>Save Pattern. Then you can load this pattern and assign it to your actual ornament. This pattern will be used as playback model for actual ornament. The further details about this will be explained below.

As general definition: (These ornaments will be affected (arranged) to actual key signature, chord and scale)

To make a general definition for MIDI playback regarding one ornament, click by held Shift key on an "Ornament button" in the toolbar Symbols > articulation. (It works also with custom symbols: the tabs I and II). In the corresponding dialog you will be able to load and assign an execution sample - PATTERN (MODEL) which you have stored before as a pattern (model). We recommend to live alone the buttons for ornaments delivered with the program. If you want to define a custom MIDI playback pattern, more suitable way is to do it locally as an individual

definition as explained bellow. "Octava" supports trills and ornaments with accidentals!

  As an individual definition:

Please assign a pattern directly in the symbol working dialog (after double click on the symbol).

Samples are matched with current keys and scales, if not wished particularly differently.

How to make custom pattern(s) with playback processed by Octava:

Enter your pattern. Mark these and change to "cue" notes. Store the phrase as pattern.

In addition, there are the following possibilities:

  1. Color the notes in green which should always recur (trills)
  2. Color a note in red. This is played by the ornamentation as long as held out (for example by ).
  3. Store (save) the pattern as cue-notes so that this isn't adapted to a current scale but is played as noted down by you.

Load the sample Ornament 1 to Ornament 5 to look at corresponding patterns (models).
